Black tea may be just as good as green tea for health benefits
www.buddypower.net reports that extracts from black tea may help reduce weight gain, says a new study from the Functional Food Business Project at Kirin Holdings Company. 06-08-2010
The study showed that black tea extracts suppressed putting on weight and body fat levels, with the benefits linked to reduced fat absorption. Drinking tea with its benefits in mind has become more and more popular, especially because of the leaf’s polyphenol content. Green tea contains 30-40% of water-extractable polyphenols, while black tea (green tea that has been oxidized by fermentation) contains 3-10%. Oolong tea is semi-fermented tea and its polyphenol levels are between that of green and black tea. The four primary polyphenols found in fresh tealeaves are epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and epicatechin (EC). Most of the studies have focussed on green tea and its constituents, most notably EGCG. To date green tea has been linked to a reduced risk of Alzheimer's and certain cancers, improved cardiovascular and oral health, as well as benefits in weight management. The study results are consistent with the possibility that black tea-derived polyphenols are responsible for the observed physiologic effects of the black tea extracts, and there are also apparent weight management benefits.
