Pasta sauce and potatoes should be included in '5-A-Day'

www.gdaguru.com today reports that pasta sauce, potatoes and ready meals should be promoted as part of the ‘5-A-Day' campaign, according to a group of experts set up by the Government to boost healthy eating.   03-09-2010

The Fruit and Vegetable Task Force said poor nutrition is costing the NHS £8 billion a year because of obesity and other health problems.

Despite a multi-million campaign to encourage people to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, average daily consumption has fallen in the last two years from 3.9 portions per day to 3.7.

The group of nutritionists and other specialists said the best way to address the gap is to encourage people to eat fruit and vegetables in ‘composite foods’ such as fruit salads, cereal bars, vegetable soups and tomato sauces.

Even ready meals that contain a high amount of fruit or vegetables and not too much fat or salt, such as stir fries, can be included.

Potatoes, that have been given a bad image because of the trend for low carbohydrate diets but contain high levels of vitamins and fibre, should also be promoted as part of the campaign.
