Sight loss linked to obesity

A study by the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) has revealed that obese people are twice as likely to lose their sight. 07-09-2006

Obesity carries an additional risk of developing conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and cataracts - and can also double the risk of dry age-related macular degeneration. Those with a genetic predisposition could be as much as 11 times more likely to develop this, compared with people of normal weight. Those who are obese are also 10 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes - 60 per cent of all diabetics suffer from retinopathy.

The risk of cataracts is also doubled, and retinal vein occlusion, in which the veins that drain blood from the eyes become blocked, is four times more likely. Lead author Barbara McLaughlan, RNIB eye health consultant, said people should maintain a healthy weight and eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as fish, to protect eye health. She also recommended regular eye tests, exercise and giving up smoking.
