Diabetes risk cut by losing weight

US researchers at George Washington University in Maryland say that weight loss is a key factor in reducing diabetes risk in those who are overweight. 13-09-2006

 

The researchers studied participants in the intensive lifestyle intervention part of the Diabetes Prevention Program, which involved reducing calories and fat intake. The goal was to reduce weight by 7 per cent. The researchers found the subjects reduced their likelihood of developing diabetes by 58 per cent over a three-year period. The participants were all overweight and experiencing some inability to process glucose.

The intervention also aimed to persuade the participants to exercise moderately for at least two-and-a-half hours every week. The researchers found exercise helped the subjects keep weight off, but weight loss was the most important factor in reducing diabetes risk. The participants cut fat intake to less than 25 per cent of their total calorie intake.

The study is published in the journal Diabetes Care.
