With new health messages appearing by the day, there is one message that is consistent from all health professionals - start the day with a healthy, balanced breakfast. So, to celebrate Farmhouse Breakfast Week (24-30 January 2010), organiser HGCA has created a range of simple tips to highlight four of the main health benefits of breakfast.

1. Breakfast benefits ...weight management
People who start the day with a healthy breakfast are more likely to be within their ideal weight range than people who skip breakfast . Research shows that essential nutrients missed at breakfast are less likely to be compensated for during other meals of the day .
Tip: try baked eggs in tomato, served on top of a wholemeal muffin at only 265 kcals and 2g saturated fat/portion.
2. Breakfast benefits ...energy levels
Energy stores and blood sugar levels need to be topped up after a night’s sleep, and a healthy breakfast is great for boosting metabolism and giving you that get-up-and-go feeling. It only takes moments to make a bowl of wholegrain cereal or toast and the benefits will stay with you throughout the morning.
Tip: a bowl of nutty muesli with lots of wholegrains, seeds and nuts, served with fruit compote is full of vitality and provides an instant energy boost.
3. Breakfast benefits ...concentration
Studies show that a breakfast such as wholegrain cereals, including porridge, can have a really positive impact on your body. It not only affects your physical performance, but your mood and concentration levels too.
Tip: give your brain a workout with a bowl of porridge, full of oaty goodness. Simply add your favourite topping - jazz it up with some orange curd, honey or toss in some berries.
4. Breakfast benefits ...mood
Research has revealed that those who eat breakfast everyday are less depressed and have lower perceived levels of stress. A ‘full English’ is the top breakfast for cheering people up, followed by a bacon sandwich .
Tip: for a fun breakfast that’s guaranteed to put the whole family in a good mood, try some Eggy Bread Muffins with Bacon.
HGCA’s Consultant Dietitian, Jane Griffin said: “The starting point for any healthy diet is a balanced breakfast and the nutrients gained give you a head start by benefiting mood, weight, concentration and energy levels. It’s quick and easy to prepare and with such a wealth of breakfast foods available on your own doorstep, you won’t have to look far to find a healthy choice that’s right for you.”
