Trans fats

Trans Fats are bi-products of the hydrogenation process.  They have no nutritional value and are thought to be as harmful to heart health as saturates.07-07-2009

Hydrogenated vegetable oil must be included in the ingredients list on food labels but trans fats don't need to be labelled separately under European law.

Nowadays in the UK we eat a lot more saturated fats than trans fats. So we should try to focus on cutting down on saturates.
Foods high in saturates and which may feature in vegetarian diets include:
• pastries
• cakes and biscuits
• some savoury snacks
• some sweet snacks and chocolate
• coconut oil, coconut cream and palm oil
• Cheese, ice cream, full fat dairy foods and butte

Foods rich in unsaturated fat
These foods are all rich in unsaturated fat:
• oily fish
• avocados
• nuts and seeds
• sunflower, rapeseed, olive and vegetable oils, and spreads made from these
