It’s estimated that up to 40% of parents believe their child may have a food allergy or intolerance, and this is big business with all manner of high street intolerance tests being marketed to vulnerable parents. Most of these tests are completely unscientific and in many cases give false positive results. Parents frequently remove whole food groups from their child’s diet without sufficient guidance to replace these food with nutritionally complete alternatives. For the childcare industry, the high prevalence of self- diagnosed or mis- diagnosed food allergies has huge health and safety implications.
